Trying to make maximum out of my current form: Sanju Samson

Recently, the T20 World Cup 2026 was successfully concluded between India and Sri Lanka. India defended its title by defeating New Zealand by 96 runs in the final, and became the first host team to win three T20 World Cup titles, and the first team to win two consecutive T20 World Cup editions. Meanwhile, New Zealand's wait to win its first trophy got extended. The New Zealand team lost its second final. Earlier also, New Zealand had faced defeat in the 2021 T20 World Cup final. But New Zealand isn't the only team with a record of losing more than one T20 World Cup final. In this article, we'll explore the teams that have lost the most T20 World Cup finals.

1. Pakistan (2007 & 2022)

Pakistan is the first team in this list, which has lost the T20 WC finals 2 times. Their first T20 World Cup final defeat came in 2007 against arch-rivals India. In this big final, thanks to Gautam Gambhir’s 75, India posted 157/5 in 20 overs after batting first. In response, Pakistan were bowled out on 152 runs, and they lost the World Cup by 5 runs. Misbah-ul-Haq was the highest scorer for them, with 43 runs. For India, Irfan Pathan and RP Singh took 3 wickets each.

Pakistan’s second T20 World Cup final loss came in 2022, when they lost against England. In this match, thanks to Sam Curran’s brilliant bowling (4 over-12 runs -3 wickets), England restricted Pakistan on 138/8. In response, Ben Stokes played a match winning 52-run knock, and took his team to a world cup victory.

2. Sri Lanka (2009 & 2012)

The second team in this list is Sri Lanka. They have also lost T20 World Cup finals twice so far. They lost their first T20 World Cup final against Pakistan in the 2009 edition. The Sri Lankan side reached the finals undefeated. However, in the finals, the team didn’t perform well, which cost them to lose the final. In this match, despite Kumar Sangakkara’s 64, Sri Lanka could manage only 138 runs after batting first. Abdul Razzaq took most 3 wickets. In response, Pakistan chased this target in 18.4 overs with 8 wickets in hand. Shahid Africi scored 54 runs in 40 balls.

After the 2009 WC Final loss, Sri Lanka once again reached the finals 2012, and this time, West Indies were their opponents. The match was played in R.Premdasa Stadium, Colombo, which is Sri Lanka’s home ground. Sri Lanka had a chance to win the World Cup in front of a home crowd. But, unfortunately, they lose that opportunity.  In the finals, Sri Lankan bowlers restricted West Indies to 137/6. Ajantha Mendis took 4 wickets. In response, Sri Lanka were bowled out on 101 runs only and lost their second final by 36 runs.

3. New Zealand (2021 & 2026)

To play their first ever T20 World Cup final, New Zealand took 7 T20 World Cup editions. They played their first ever T20 WC final in the 2021 edition, and their opponents were Australia.
